Introduction
by David Lloyd

These Tributes are presented for the most part in a chronological order corresponding to the dates when contributors worked with or knew Gregorio. With a few exceptions they required little or no editing.

The responses began after an early (November 2007) batch of invitations went out to those I could find in Cambridge and to my contacts from Sheffield with requests to inform others whom might like to contribute. I was delighted to receive many proposals, and the present collection was completed in December 2011 and collated by Dr. J. Barbara Evans at Cardiff University, Wales, UK.

The aim of these personal recollections was not to duplicate the literature already stemming from the Weber era in Urbana, and so the present website complements information and advances described from the continuing meetings held in Gregorio’s honour:“The International Weber Symposium on Innovative Fluorescence Methodologies in Biochemistry and Medicine".

Weber symposia were held in Italy in 1986 and 1991, in Hawaii in 2014201120082005, 2002, 1999, and 1995, and in Brazil in 2017.

These meeting are most recently organized from the Irvine Laboratory for Fluorescence Dynamics (LFD) supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences and the University of California: Principal Investigator, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Physics, Enrico Gratton.

Since these articles were written, David M. Jameson has edited a remarkable book Perspectives on Flourescence - A Tribute to Gregorio Weber (Springer International Publishing Switzerland) was published in 2016.
